In learning aim B, I need to demonstrate my skills in the rehearsal and performance of at least 2 contrasting pieces.
I need to use rehearsal techniques such as:
- Warm-ups
- Physical preparation (e.g. relaxation and breathing techniques and technical exercises(as appropriate))
- Learning repertoire
- Rehearsing with accompanist/band (as appropriate)
- Musical interaction with other performers (as appropriate)
- Receiving and giving constructive feedback
- Independent practise
- Time management (e.g. scheduled rehearsals)
- Listening to instruction/direction
- Willingness to try things out
- Appropriate interaction with others, trust and cooperation
- Rehearsal discipline
Week 13
This week I have decided to do 'I Dreamed A Dream' from Les Miserable and 'The A Team' by Ed Sheeran, for my two contrasting songs. I believe 'I Dreamed A Dream' will be able to show power and strength in my voice and also the range of my voice. 'The A Team' contrasts well with this as it is calmer and the contrast will be able to show all different abilities of my voice.
Week 14
In this weeks lesson, I went though the two songs I chosen to see if they were suitable for my audition. I think they will be good songs to song as I am confident with singing both of these songs.
In my music lessons with Mr Gower, we went through different exercises such as scales. We then sang 'Ghost' by Ella Henderson which was good as I like the song and it's up to date.
Week 15
This week I printed off the lyrics for my two audition songs and went through the songs to polish any last bits I needed to before my audition I will be doing next week.
In my lessons with Mr Gower, we sang Rihanna 'Stay'. I like this song as it's not too hard and it's by an artist I really enjoy listening too. We focused on accuracy of pitch and switching from head to chest voice.
Week 16
This week I did my one part of my audition and sang 'A Team' by Ed Sheeran. I think it went okay however, singing in front of people made me realise that it wasn't the best choice of song as it was quite boring.
I think, to of made it more interesting, I could've improved:
- Expression and Dynamics
- Improvisation
- Vibrato
I think to carry the performance further, I could have either accompanied myself, or got someone to accompany me; instead of using a backing track.
Week 17
This week I have decided to change both my songs as I wasn't happy with either of them. I am now doing 'Stay' by Rihanna, as I have previously done it with Mr Gower and I feel comfortable singing it, and 'I'm Not That Girl' from Wicked the musical, as I love the song and think it will be a challenge to be able to pull it off.
Week 18
This week I did my audition 'I'm Not That Girl'. I felt really positive with this piece as I had practised it a lot and felt confident.
Audition One
I think what I did well was:
- Looked up
- used my diaphragm to breath properly
- I warmed up before
- projected
- opening my mouth to be able to finish of words, which will help with diction
- use more body language to help bring across to the audience how I'm feeling
- learn the words entirely of by heart so I don't need to keep looking down at them
This week I decided to change my second audition piece too 'XO' by Beyoncé. This is because I feel it would be much more of a challenge to do and would show more of my skills.
Videoed rehearsal/lesson with Mr Gower:
Week 20
This I decided to change my song again, as I didn't feel comfortable with 'XO' by Beyoncé. My new song is 'Titanium' by David Guetta ft. Sia. I chose this because I felt it was a good song to show off range and I also really like the song. I am going to perform on this Fridays lesson. For my performance, I am going to print off lyrics and go through the song make sure I'm confident with the lyrics and notes. This will help my stage presence for Friday. The thing that is stopping me from performing today is the fact I don't know the words properly yet and I believe that would effect my stage presence.
Rebecca's performance review:
I think Rebecca did really well in her performance of 'Lay Me Down' by Sam Smith, as her diction was good and stage presence was good and confident. However, I also think she could have improved on a few things such as, timing and breathing. Because the backing track doesn't really give away easy hints of timing, her timing was slightly off. also I believe if she used her diaphragm properly and breathed correctly, her notes would have been stronger, bringing out an even more confident feeling to the performance.
Monique's performance review:
Again, I think Monique did a good performance of 'Young and Beautiful' by Lana Del Ray, as she hit the notes strongly. The only things I would really say about her performance was lack of eye contact (looking up and down) and her timing was a bit rushed. Monique sang acoustic therefor it was much more difficult to keep in time. I think if she used eye contact with the camera or the audience, it would have improved her stage presence and made her look more confident.
Week 21
This weeks lesson I decided to move my performance to next Friday so I could practice more and get Mr Gower's thoughts and targets on the song. He said it was good however I don't need to belt throughout and can get away with only belting in the last chorus and in the head for the rest of the song that's needed. I like this idea and it builds it up more and makes the end of the song more of a climax.
Ki has also been teaching me a few sequences on the drums and we decided to do a duet with him on the guitar and me on the drums. Even though I'm not the best, I think it's a really fun instrument and could possibly help me in the future at some point.
Week 22
This week I rehearsed my song and decided I would perform my last audition next Wednesday, as I felt I needed more time to prepare.
