Unit 6 - Recording Learning Aim A

What is the learning aim?

This learning aim is all about planning a recording session after learning about all the technical equipment.

 What is multi-tasking?

Multi-tasking is when you record each instrument individually and mix them all on top of each other.

 Why is this useful?

Multi-tasking is useful for correcting any individual mistakes so the whole band doesn't have to redo it. Also it's useful for editing each instrument to sound the best, instead of all of it together.

Through a range of recording sessions, I am going to practice and learn how to organise and plan recording studio sessions. My Learning Aim A is demonstrated by my planning of each practice recording session, demonstration of use of equipment, and describing the organisation of each recording session.
Week 1
This week we started the learning aim off by searching the studio looking for things we will need later on. These are the pictures I took of the features I found:
Parts of the Studio

At first it was hard to find them as I wasn't used to reason. However I got used to it eventually and started to be able to work my way round reason and was able to find these features.

Week 2
This week we set up the equipment for a vocalist to record. Firstly we got a demonstration on how to do it. After that it was all taken apart and we were told to re-collect all of the equipment with no guidance or help. This allowed us to be independent and work it out for ourselves. I found it quite easy and was able to do it rather quickly.
The type of microphone we used was a condenser microphone. we connected it to the mixer through the snake in channel 1. Channel 1 was connected to the back of the M-audio Profire interface through Channel 2.

Week 3
This week we recorded some talking to test out reason and how to use it. We edited the voice in different ways to give us a feel on how it would be like to edit a real recording. I thought it was interesting on how to work it and what you can do to make recordings sound the way they were. We repeated the setting up of the microphone of yesterday. We checked the SPL however it was quite quiet so we adjusted it.

Week 4
This week we recorded a violin piece. We recorded 3 separate pieces of music and it took 1 or 2 times to record each one. This was because the violinist went wrong and we had to correct her and re-record.

See below for all technical and organisational planning for the violin recording, including Health and Safety considerations.

Week 5
This week I started mixing my violin recordings and I came out with this as my result:

It was hard as it took quite a while to figure out how to make it the way I wanted it too sound. We also had to listen to each track back and see if it was the right one or not. Eventually I got used to it, using different features, making the start silent etc... and got the result I wanted. I highlighted the beginning of each track where there was no violin playing and I silenced it so no noise of feet or scuffling was able to be heard. I was also able to zoom right in at the end of each track and crop it directly where each track ended. So each one was even and there was no noise.

Week 6 -

For recording learning aim b, I am going to select people to do a recording for me. I will make sure I have at least 3 different things being recorded so I can multi track. After the recording I will mix it all together to make it sound good and like a proper recording.

So far, I am thinking about choosing the song 'Say Something' by A Great Big World and Christina Aguilera. This is because I know the song well and I am very fond of it.
I am thinking of using Vicki Parry for singing and I will join her for the harmonies. I will also ask someone who can play the piano, to play the piano.

I think it would be easier if I did the singing myself with Vicki as we both know it so the time needed will be much less than if we had to learn it.

Therefor, I will use the first couple of sessions to record the singing, giving the pianist a chance to learn and go over the song. I will record the melody first and then the harmonies. After that, the Piano.

I will organise rehearsals after school or at lunch times, and hopefully record during a lesson or after school.
